Originally known as Stiles Switch when the International-Great Northern Railroad established the depot in 1876, this community developed as a vital shipping center for Swiss and German settlers cultivating the fertile Williamson County Blackland Prairie. When the post office opened in 1901, residents chose to honor Reverend Homer S. Thrall, a distinguished Methodist minister and historian whose writings documented early Texas history. The discovery of oil in 1915 on the Fritz Fuchs farm triggered a spectacular boom—the population exploded from 150 to nearly 3,000 as “gushers” from the Serpentine formation transformed the agricultural village overnight. While the oil fields eventually quieted, Thrall’s agricultural foundation remained strong. Today, the community hosts the Texas A&M AgriLife Research Center on the historic Stiles Farm Foundation property, where cutting-edge agricultural science continues a legacy that began generations ago.
